1. Activist Feedback
Jon, who leafleted with Darina, Joe, Leslie, Madonna, Deborah, Laura,
and Wally at the Joel Osteen Night of Hope event in Chicago, writes:
Total: 2900 Would Jesus Eat Meat Today? booklets
We got there at 5pm, and the event was supposed to start at 7pm.
However, people kept arriving until 7:30, so we stayed until we finished
handing out booklets. This was not an especially ideal crowd – young
people were few and far between. That being said, a lot of people seemed
interested in our information, as we emphasized that we were giving out
Christian VEGETARIAN Association booklets. Many people reached out to
grab one after hearing our description. A handful of vegetarians echoed
their support of our work. Upon encountering them and hearing that they
didn't "need" a booklet, we asked them to pass your booklet along to a
friend. We frequently saw people reading through the booklets while
waiting for a traffic light (a few of us were stationed at the closest
el stop before the venue). We reached a large number people in just a
few hours at this event, largely due to the huge 8 person team we
assembled – thanks to everyone who helped make this event a great
success!

3. Commentary on Man’s Search for Meaning by
Victor Frankl
I think this amazing book’s message is as relevant today as when it
received high acclaim in the late 1940s. Frankl was a practicing
psychiatrist when Nazis sent him to the Auschwitz concentration camp.
That he survived the death camps was little short of a miracle, and his
personal account, including a self-reflective study of the psychological
effects of his experience, is a gift to humanity.
I have read few accounts that better describe the pain, suffering,
fear, and horror of being in a concentration camp. Frankl related the
story of a friend who was having a nightmare, and Frankl chose not to
awaken him, because no nightmare could be worse that what everyone was
experiencing when awake.
Frankl came to realize that, once a person had a reason to live, that
person could survive almost anything. If this were true of the extreme
conditions of the death camps, then surely it applies to those who
struggle to cope with the stresses and disappointments of modern life.
Frankl’s personal and professional experiences let to his developing “logotherapy,”
one aspect of which is that therapists assist clients who are suffering
from depression and other existential crises by identifying what is
meaningful to them.
As I read Frankl’s reports of patient conditions, it occurred to me
that, consistently, what people found meaningful was their relationships
with and service to others. Our culture (fueled by corporate-sponsored
media) tells people hundreds of times per day that purchasing certain
goods and services will make them happy and fulfilled. Jesus said, “If
any one would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all” (Mark
9:35) And Jesus washed the feet of his disciples and instructed them to
do as he had done (John 13:5-15). Jesus’ teachings accord with Frankl’s
insights – self-centered living obstructs personal fulfillment and a
sense of value, meaning, and purpose in life. An obvious implication is
that those who harm other individuals, whether human or nonhuman,
spiritually harm themselves.
