1. Important United Church of Christ Resolution
Last week, the United Church of Christ General Synod passed “Resolution for Mindful and Faithful Eating.” The resolution calls for all church bodies “to explore ways in which our food choices can be mindful and faithful, so that, to the best of our abilities, what we eat reflects our values and beliefs.” Further, it encourages the identification, development, and promotion of curricula at all education levels help Christians understand how what we eat impacts our health, God’s earth, and God’s animals.
This resolution will help open the door to discussions about animal agriculture, as well as other aspects of faithful eating. It was supported by Rev. Diane Ryder, Rev. Lisa Hadler, and CVA chair Steve Kaufman.
2. Activist Feedback
Jeff, who leafleted with Queenie and Sean at the Hillsong United Concert in Phoenix, AZ, writes:
This is a great concert to leaflet, definitely one of the better Christian concerts we've done. Everyone was friendly and in a good mood. The crowd was a wide range of college, young adults, and older adults.
I was saying 'Hi, could you read this when you get a chance?" and Queenie and Sean were saying "Hi, info from Christian Veg Association?" Acceptance rate was very high for both. Most responded sincerely that they'd read the brochure, and some people even came back to get one. We overheard a few people starting to discuss it.
Also, I targeted younger people whenever possible since they are more likely to change their diet. We leafleted before the show for an hour and handed out 705 booklets. This crowd arrived a bit early, so we could have arrived even a little more than an hour prior. It was a very good use of our time, and with more people could have given out even more!

3. Essay: Is “Humane Slaughter” Possible?
Some people argue that it is “humane” to kill young, healthy animals, as long as there is no pain or suffering leading up to and including slaughter. However, animals have an intense desire to live. Does this desire deserve moral consideration?
Those who deny that this desire to live is morally important (hereafter “deniers”) argue that it is “instinct.” True, there is probably a genetic basis for this desire, but are not many of our own desires (including a desire to live) ingrained, with a presumably genetic basis? Whether the desire derives from genetic factors, early childhood experiences, or other sources does not seem morally relevant for either humans or nonhumans. We should respect the needs and desires of others, and discounting desires of others on the grounds of their presumed sources seems arbitrary and is, often, self-serving.
Deniers sometimes assert that farmed animals have humans to thank for their very existence, and a premature death is better than no life at all. However, a nonbeing cannot be wronged, so it is fallacious to claim that an animal who never existed has been harmed by not being offered the gift of life. In contrast, once an animal becomes a living, feeling being with needs and desires, addressing these needs and desires become morally relevant.
Next week, I will discuss how it is difficult to trust producers of “humane meat,” and how those who claim to eat only “humane meat” find it socially difficult to avoid consuming the products of factory farms.
