1. We Are All Noah – Now on DVD
The powerful video We Are All Noah, produced by the Culture and Animals
Foundation, is now available on DVD. The 30-minute video shows how
concern for animals is a common theme of many religions. We Are All Noah
considers a wide range of areas of animal mistreatment, including
vivisection, animal agriculture, and “disposable” pets. The DVD can be
purchased from the CVA for $6 each (to cover our printing and shipping
costs). Send a check to CVA, PO Box 201791, Cleveland, OH 44120.
2. Milk Is Deadly for Male Calves -
By Jim Skirha
Every year dairy cows are artificially inseminated to produce a calf
to maintain their milk production. A little over half their calves are
male. Since these males cannot produce milk and the need for work
animals has been replaced by machines, they are useless to the dairy
farmer. Such males would grow to a size of 1200 lbs. and live 20-25 and
the cost of feeding, housing, and cleaning up after them would be huge.
Therefore, the male calves are killed within a few days of birth,
chained by the neck in a small, dark, cramped stall for 4-5 months and
then killed for veal, or raised for 1 ½ years for beef. Because the
dairy farmer cannot make a profit without killing the males, in every
dairy product there is a hidden chunk of veal or beef!
3. February Peaceable Table Is Now Online
* One of Angela's recipes in this issue that you'll particularly
want to try is the tasty and nutritious Red Lentil and Arborio Rice
Stew.
* The February Pilgrim is Sola Wolff, who tells of her lifelong love
of animals and gradual journey into a nonviolent diet.
* In the Pioneer column we present second part of the story of
philosopher/activist Tom Regan, who is still with us at almost seventy
years young.
* Our Poetry selection, by John Galsworthy, is the hymn-like "Prayer
for Gentleness to All Creatures."
We always welcome letters and submissions, especially for the "My
Pilgrimage" column.
