I wanted to report that I had a very positive response to the pamphlet
"Are We Good Stewards of God's Creation?" which I handed out as part of
an adult Sunday School class on 7/29. My Mennonite Church USA
congregation in State College, PA is doing a study of the Mennonite
Cookbook Simply in Season, which encourages buying locally and
seasonably and supporting sustainable agriculture. I was a co-leader of
the session on animals. The other co-leader grew up on a hog farm and
still has a positive view of traditional large scale animal agriculture.
I handed out about 35 copies of the pamphlet to those who attended the
class. I also gave a few pamphlets to the vegetarian children of people
in the class so that they could have more information when they told
their friends about their vegetarianism.
There are only a few vegetarians in this congregation, but quite a few
of the people in the class referred to themselves as near vegetarians or
as making an effort to eat less animals products. Mennonites have
traditionally included a lot of farmers, and several families in this
congregation are farmers now, including animal farmers. However, this
congregation is very concerned about social justice and environmental
issues, and because of this, they oppose factory farming, and are open
to eating less animal products.
People were especially receptive to the idea of being good stewards of
God's creation. I believe that this was a good example of Christians
with different views and perspectives coming together with
open-mindedness and respect. I hope that some seeds were sown that will
bear the fruit of choosing more plant-based diets in the future.
Thank you and everyone involved with CVA for providing these materials.
