Pope Francis' Call for Good Stewardship of All of God’s Creation

Yesterday, the Vatican released Pope Francis’s new encyclical on the environment, which turned out to be groundbreaking. The Pope noted that “our indifference or cruelty towards fellow creatures of this world sooner or later affects the treatment we mete out to other human beings. We have only one heart, and the same wretchedness which leads us to mistreat an animal will not be long in showing itself in our relationships with other people. Every act of cruelty towards any creature is ‘contrary to human dignity’.”

I think this new encyclical on the environment (full of references to animals, a call on all of us to embrace a more humane path, and to be good stewards of the planet), brings the subject about our relationship to God’s animals to the forefront. In turn, this should encourage accountability, conversation and awakening to the brutal reality of the animal agriculture industry.
