A fantastic piece by Marc Bekoff, Ethologist and Professor Emeritus
of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Colorado,
exposes the inherent cruelty of factory farming, more specifically the
raising of turkeys.
He explains that turkeys are sentient animals who suffer greatly in
factory farms where they are confined in tiny spaces, mutilated without
anesthesia, fed unnatural diets, forced to live in filthy places with
ammonia-filled air, etc. Bekoff rightly challenges the notion that a
tortured and slaughtered animals needs to be part of a Thanksgiving
celebration.

Of course there is no need to center the Thanksgiving celebration on
a meal involving an animal who suffered and was killed for solely the
sake of taste and profit. In fact, a Thanksgiving celebration should be
about peacemaking, thanksgiving, healing and reconciliation. The
intentional unnecessary suffering caused to any of God's creatures has
no part in this celebration.
