Agribusiness Exposed

Tom Philpott, food and ag blogger for Mother Jones, explains how the animal agriculture industry became what it is, a monopoly of unethical corporations. He mentions the revulsion he felt at Ted Genoways' extraordinary article on conditions at a factory-scale pig-processing plant.

Today, just four giant companies (Tyson, Cargill, JBS, and Smithfield) process more than half of the beef, chicken, and pork consumed in the United States, thereby causing unimaginable suffering to farmed animals, devastation in the environment and an increase in health risks for humans.

Agribusiness is clearly out of control until consumers realize they are the only ones with the power to put a stop to this. The animal agriculture industry would not be thriving if people started aligning their food choices with their innermost ethical and spiritual values. Surely, by stepping up to our responsibilities as stewards of God’s Creation, we could bring healing and alleviate suffering into a world were God’s animals are seen as mere commodities; a fact that makes God’s love for them a mockery!
