Marc Bekoff, biologist, animal behaviorist and professor emeritus at the
University of Colorado writes a compelling essay about the emotions that
animals feel.
Dr. Bekoff believes it’s very important for humans to recognize that animals
are capable of feeling joy, fear, sadness, etc. for that belief shapes the
way we relate to them. Referring to the way we treat animals he says, “We
must not simply continue with the status quo because that is what we've
always done and it's convenient to do so.”… “Quite often, what we accept as
"good welfare" isn't "good enough."” Marc Bekoff also raises the issue of
our silencing the emotions of animals, when it is their emotions that
indicate what we can or cannot do to them.
