What may seem very surprising to compassionate people, the Chicago’s foie
gras ban, implemented last month, is already under threat. Two council
members (previously supporters of the ban), have filed an ordinance with the
city clerk to repeal it. One of them alleges that the ban made Chicago a
national laughingstock, while the second refers to the people’s right to
choose. Fortunately, on the side of compassion, Gene Bauston, president of
Farm Sanctuary, believes that "Chicago has set a humane example, and it
should be proud," and that "animal cruelty should not be a choice."
Our hope is that the ban firmly remains in place and sets a precedent for
other states to follow. Kindness to animals is not a choice but an act of
obedience to God.
