Take Heart!

The road to ethical eating

With the growing awareness of intensive modern agriculture and its destructiveness to the environment, our health and farmed animals, people are forced to face the fact that what they eat matters greatly. At grocery stores, we are presented with products that are labeled “free-range”, “organic”, “grass-fed” as well as locally grown vs. shipped over long distances. It’s not very easy to take into account so many variables such as: Is it good for the environment? What about my health? Is animal suffering involved? And my budget?

Michael Pollan, writer of "The Omnivore's Dilemma" (Penguin Press, 2006), believes people should set priorities and make decisions based on them. In Pollan’s case, animal suffering is his first priority, followed by environmental impact and lastly labor involved (i.e. child slavery, fair trade).

For us, Christian Vegetarians, honoring God is our priority by following the teachings of Jesus. We can enjoy a healthy plant-based diet that has the least environmental impact as possible and the least animal suffering involved. We do have to make it our business to find out where our food comes from and if the workers involved in producing it earn a fair wage and are treated according to labor laws. The more people adhering to these precepts, the better the world will be for the generations to come and the more glory to God.
