1. Faith of Christ and Capitalism, part 1

I last asserted that our communities need the faith of Christ, which is manifest in many religions as a faith that God wants us to treat each other and the world around us with love and respect. Another way to conceive this is the Golden Rule - found in some form in nearly every religion - that we should treat others as we would like to be treated.

This relates not only to how we might become nicer people. I think human civilization depends on the widespread adoption of the faith of Christ. Fortunately, this does not require that all people become Christian and have faith in Christ. They can have the faith of Christ if their values and their actions are guided by the same faith that Christ manifested in word and deed that we should serve God (however understood) or the material universe (for those who do not believe in God) with love and respect.

Unfortunately, as I will discuss in upcoming essays, this faith conflicts with capitalism. This is problematic because capitalism is largely responsible for the remarkable advances in science and medicine that have improved the quality of life for many people. Can we enjoy the fruits of capitalism while avoiding its dangers?

In upcoming essays, I will discuss capitalism's benefits and its harms. Whether capitalism is a desirable economic system is important when it comes to human flourishing, and it also has great relevance to animal issues.
