1. Toward Building the “Beloved Community”
Last time, I asked how we might build the “beloved community,” in which
all individuals are treated with compassion and respect. Nobody would be
excluded for arbitrary reasons, such as sex, gender identification, skin
pigmentation, nation of origin, cognitive status, or species membership.
Excluding any group of individuals based on an arbitrary criterion paves the
way for exclusion of other individuals based on other arbitrary criteria.
This does not mean that all individuals should be treated the same. The
needs and capabilities of individuals differ, and our obligations differ
among individuals. For example, we have a greater obligation to protect and
nourish the children we choose to raise than other children. We have greater
obligations to protect and nourish communities that are dedicated to
protecting and nourishing us than other communities.
A difficulty is that humans tend to be tribal, and favoring one’s own tribe
(however defined) can easily lead to conflicts with or harm to other tribes.
Another difficulty is that humans are often selfish, and they frequently
harm other individuals in the pursuit of self-gratification. A third problem
which is related to the first two, is that humans are drawn to the
scapegoating process, about which I’ve talked at length. How might we
transcend these barriers to the “beloved community”?
