1. On Mindfulness (continued)
Mindfulness engenders awe, wonder, and a desire to be a healer rather
than an exploitative destroyer. Harming humans and nonhumans requires
mindlessness, because thinking about victims’ experiences would naturally
conflict with any desire to see them suffer and die. Being mindful can be
painful, because empathy with those who suffer is unpleasant. But the
opposite – refusing to acknowledge the experiences of others – results in
harm not only to others but to ourselves in that we lead inauthentic,
superficial, fraudulent lives.
We might lose a little freedom when we decide to do our best to not harm
others. Our food choices might be restricted, we can become less inclined to
financial and sexually exploit other people, and we might lead less
resource-intensive lives. What we gain is potentially much greater than any
modest restrictions in lifestyle choices.
We can look at the humans and nonhumans around us and know that, to the
best of our abilities, we are living as their friends. We don’t have to
avoid animal advocates to avoid awareness of what we are doing to nonhumans.
We don’t need to establish arbitrary boundaries to separate those who
warrant our compassion and concern and those who do not. Instead, we can be
open to truth, knowledge, and wisdom; and this is truly liberating.
Some people find that embracing animal rights is a burden, but I think it
can be a gift. I will discuss how this gift might be shared with others.
