1. The Problem of Evil
Theologians have long struggled with the problem of evil, often called the “theodicy problem.” Theodicy posits that God controls the world. The theodicy problem is that, if God is good and God is all-powerful, how can evil exist in the world? I will explore six hypotheses (or more, if readers challenge me with additional hypotheses):
I will consider #3 first. I do not find this hypothesis reasonable. It is
hard to believe that an all-powerful God could not have created a world with
less suffering. Indeed, the agonies of countless nonhumans, abused and
murdered to satisfy human taste and other preferences, seem largely
unnecessary. Therefore, humanity’s massive cruelty to nonhumans, as well as
countless cruelties perpetrated against members of our species, is evil.
