2. Book Review: Vystopia: The Anguish of Being Vegan in a Non-Vegan World by Clare Mann

Being vegan in a non-vegan world can be hard. Those who know about the cruelties associated with animal agribusiness and other forms of animal abuse are surrounded by people who routinely, and evidently happily, sponsor activities that should be criminal. How do we maintain friendships and family ties when our values differ so fundamentally from theirs, at least when it comes to animal issues?

As a clinical psychologist, Clare Mann has had many clients whose distress is related to their empathy with nonhuman victims of animal agribusiness and their sense of alienation from a society that seems not only indifferent to animals suffering but that actually endorses the cruelties. After identifying struggles that many vegans face, she offers many helpful suggestions. Some involve self-care, and some involve having compassion for the struggles of people who resist a lifestyle that avoids harming animals.

I highly recommend this short and very readable book.
