1. Looking for a Moral Compass: Following Leaders

I have been discussing the challenges of making informed, ethical choices in the very complex world in which we live. Before offering some specific strategies, I would like to comment on widely used strategies that I find problematic.

First, I am very skeptical of uncritical devotion to charismatic leaders. Such leaders exude strength and confidence, in contrast to acknowledging nuance and uncertainty. I suspect that their appeal derives largely from the universal desire to have the sense of security that we experienced as children when we felt protected by our parent(s). As children, our parents seemed powerful and omniscient, and our intuitive sense of vulnerability was relieved by their presence. However, there is little reason to believe that parent-like charismatic leaders care about the needs of their followers. Unlike parents who are genuinely invested in their children’s welfare, charismatic leaders tend to be dedicated to their own ends. I think a good rule of thumb is that we should not trust leaders who gain their power by demonizing others. Their appeal is through the scapegoating process, in which they convince people that a group of perceived outsiders threaten to destroy society. The leaders claim that only they have the power and wisdom needed to destroy these “enemies” and protect the populace. Almost always, these views are largely if not entirely untrue, and they almost always end in violence.

Next, I will discuss the danger of defending abstractions in contrast to defending real individuals.
