1. Threats to Human Civilization 1. Climate Change

There is little doubt that humas are contributing significantly to a rapid change in climate. Many assert that this gravely threatens human civilization, which has prompted a range of responses. Many people, particularly young people who are convinced that climate catastrophe is likely during their lifetimes, dedicate themselves toward addressing the problem. Their efforts to reduce fossil fuel consumption or find energy sources that do not generate greenhouse gasses have met significant resistance. It is tempting to despair.

Many people who acknowledge the growing threats believe that nothing can or will be done to meaningfully alter the current trajectory. Rather than focus on reducing their own carbon footprint, which they regard as a meaningless gesture, they focus on local concerns where they can have an impact. For example, they might attend to the well-being of themselves, their families, and their communities.

Many fear that policies designed to confront climate change will cost them their jobs. Further, investors are concerned that curtailing resource consumption will slow economic growth and reduce returns on investments.

Nevertheless, I see a glimmer of hope. There is a strategy to reverse global warming that is very effective and quite painless. If the world largely adopted plant-based eating, controlled human populations, and allowed former forests that were cleared for animal agriculture to regrow, we would dramatically reduce atmospheric CO2. This contrasts with current programs and policies aimed to address climate change, which at best might slow the increase in atmospheric CO2.

Later, I will offer suggestions on how the world might transition to plant-based eating.
