1. The Garden of Eden, part 1 - Origin Stories

Why does every religion have an origin story? Each offers an account for how the universe and all life, including human life, came into being. I think that there are several inter-related reasons. First, there is a universal quest to understand where we, as individuals, came from. We find ourselves situated in a particular body at a particular place at a particular time, and we have no idea how that happened. Stories that account for the existence of the universe and of living beings give us initial clues that might elucidate how we came to exist. These stories range from the secular “Big Bang” theory to theological accounts, such as the Garden of Eden story.

In addition, if we understood where we came from, perhaps we would know our life’s destiny. This knowledge would then guide the decisions we make throughout our lives. Without a sense of why we are here, it is difficult to make choices when there are many forces pulling us in different directions. Should we seek personal pleasure or aggrandizement? Should we sacrifice personal well-being for the benefit of the collective whole? To whom do we owe allegiance – our family, our community, our religious brothers and sisters, our nation, humanity in general, all sentient beings, something else?

If we knew where we came from, we might also have a better understanding of what happens to our sense of identity when our body dies. Ernest Becker, in his Pulitzer Prize winning book The Denial of Death, argued that anxiety about mortality profoundly influences human psychology, human behavior, and societal institutions. The next essays will examine the Garden of Eden story as an attempt to address these existential questions and concerns. Is the Garden of Eden story “better” than the origin story of other religions?

2. Vegan Churches

Here are two churches that have veganism as an expectation of Christian witness. Please contact us at lorenavalenziveg@gmail.com if you know of such any churches that explicitly promote a plant-based diet.
