1. Kosher Slaughterhouse Immigration Raid: The country's largest kosher slaughterhouse, Agriprocessors Inc. plant in Postville, Iowa, was last week the target of a big immigration raid that ended in the arrest of 400 people. As a result, the plant was shut down given that it needs 800 workers to function. "I don't think the Jewish community can survive at this point without Rubashkin," Mordechai Yitzhaky, owner of KosherMart in Rockville, said of the family that owns Agriprocessors. In the past, Agriprocessors has been cited multiple times by federal and state regulators for food-safety, environmental, labor and animal cruelty violations.

2. "The fate of animals is of greater importance to me than the fear of appearing ridiculous; it is indissolubly connected to the fate of men." ~ Emile Zola (1840 - 1902), French novelist.

3. Organized Crime Linked to Illegal Fishing: According to the Australian Institute of Criminology, organized crime groups from China, Australia, Russia, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand and Japan have been linked to illegal fishing, with fish stocks either sold illegally or used to launder money. This illegal fishing could be used to pay off other criminal activities, such as drugs and arms sales, people smuggling and sex slavery.

The extent of greed has reached such dimensions that the exploitation of God's animals is affecting humanity in ways never seen before. Everyone can make a difference in this world by choosing a compassionate diet that opposes cruelty and honors God's Creation.

4. (RSV) Romans 12:15

"Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep."

It is great to realize that we are not alone. We can share our burdens and our joys and we can lend a hand to those who need us in times of trouble, including God’s animals.

5. Video Tour of Animal Cruelty in California: Farm Sanctuary of Orland has equipped a truck with 80-inch video screens on three sides to show its undercover video investigations of what it considers abuse of farmed animals and is touring California to support the November ballot measures that seek changes to the way chickens, pigs and calves are raised. Julie Janovsky, Farm Sanctuary’s director of campaigns said, “When people see a pig confined in a gestation crate, neurotically biting at the bars, unable to turn around, or take more than a step, it has a profound visceral effect on those viewing the cruelty. They know it’s inherently wrong and they want it to stop.”

6. Why People Become Vegetarian: People adopt a plant-based diet for different reasons, although they are mostly interconnected. Lauren Eadline shares, “My biggest problem is corporate control of the food industry, mostly the meat industry, where for a million reasons – human rights, animal rights and environmental rights – are most trampled on.” Peter Corn, owner of Peter’s Cornucopia, a New Hartford grocer, who caters to vegan and vegetarian believes that, “The older generation tends to do it more for health reasons, but more of the college kids tend to be more concerned about animal rights.” Erin Thurston became a vegetarian after doing a school report about the treatment of animals during meat processing.
