1. Upcoming Activist Opportunities

Leafleting and tabling are effective, enjoyable ways to show our brothers and sisters in Christ that a plant-based diet is good for God’s Creation. When you volunteer for the CVA, the CVA donates $20/hr. to the veg. or animal protection group of your choice. In particular, the Winter Jam events are outstanding leafleting opportunities, with large, young, receptive audiences. Contact Lorena at [email protected] if you can help.

2. Original Sin, part 22

In continuing the discussion about how rejection of scapegoating can be liberating, I now turn to considerations of dignity and integrity. If we show unrestricted compassion and respect, we might be loved or we might be reviled by others. Importantly, we gain the inner spiritual peace-of-mind knowing that we having been living with dignity and integrity. Conversely, if show compassion and respect to some individuals but not others, we fail to live up to our highest ideals, and, often, we are vulnerable to the charge of hypocrisy.

Hypocrisy is not the greatest sin. It is better to be a hypocrite but exhibit some degree of kindness and compassion than to be consistently callous, self-interested, and narcissistic. Hypocrisy can undermine activism, however, particularly if we ask other people to make sacrifices that we are unwilling to make ourselves.

Jesus exhorted his followers, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). If we have the same faith as Jesus, we will likewise dedicate ourselves to serving others and, in doing so, serve God.

Stephen R. Kaufman, M.D.
