1. Activist Feedback

Roman in Poland writes: I just sent 300 copies of the CVA booklets (Polish Edition) to vegie activists in Krakow. They will distribute the booklets during the World Christian Youth Meeting.

2. Motivations to Protect Nonhumans, part 3

A third reason humans would benefit from treating nonhumans with compassion and respect is that doing so would improve the quality of humans’ relationships with animals. When Noah was granted permission to eat nonhumans, it came at a steep cost. No longer would humans and nonhumans live in peace and harmony. Rather, “The fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth” (Genesis 9:2).

Today, many animals rightly fear humans, who kill nonhumans in huge numbers unnecessarily for food, clothing, entertainment, and a wide range of other reasons. Adding greatly to the injustice, humans have devised devilish methods for raising and killing animals, resulting in massive suffering. Those animals who are confined in massive factory farms have been selectively bred for docility, making it safer and easier to abuse them. These animals tend to be social herd animals who, not recognizing humans’ capacity for cruelty, often try to befriend us.

We humans tend to enjoy this show of affection, and many people claim to “love animals.” Yet, for most people, behind this façade of affection lies the truth about their complicity in animal abuse. I am convinced that, at some level of consciousness, meat-eaters and others who are complicit in animal abuse recognize that their “love of animals” is a sham. They cannot regard nonhumans and honestly say that they are the animals’ friends. This is a heavy price to pay for the taste of flesh and for the other supposed benefits of harmful animal exploitation.
