1. Activist Feedback
Rick, who leafleted with George and
Alex at Winter Jam in St. Louis, writes:
We enjoyed pleasant
weather and a young receptive crowd. We didn’t enjoy Scottrade
security as much though; they stole four boxes of our booklets off the
public sidewalk. Alex conducted a brief onsite investigation,
went into the building, and walked out much to my pleasure carrying
all four stolen boxes!
Thanks to George and Alex for their
efforts and great work!

2. Comments on Last Week’s Essay
Thank you for your good
words on MLK (part 1). I think he was touching something important in
the nonviolence community: We must also practice nonviolence toward
ourselves. The King quote you cited reminded me of St. Therese of
Lisieux (and the Little Way of Nonviolence). She refused to hate
herself or fall into despair because of her own weaknesses. "If you
are willing to bear serenely the trial of being displeasing to
yourself," she wrote to her sister, "then you will be for Jesus a
pleasant place of shelter." That is a hard saying for me, but I
believe it.
Bob Muth
It's all about individual
humility, in my opinion. If one is not bothered about one's
shortcomings and accepts them, one is easily more accepting of others.
I have a hopeless working memory and am partly physically disabled, so
I am accepting of everyone.

3. Essays in Honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., part 2
Last week, I started to reflect on the following quotation from Rev.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr: “We will continue to despise people, until
we have recognized, loved, and accepted what is despicable in
ourselves.” I talked about recognizing what we find despicable in
ourselves; today I’ll explore what it means to love those
characteristics.
We all have attributes of which we are
ashamed, which might include such things as a quick temper, irrational
jealousies, or sexual attraction to someone other than one’s life
partner. We are all imperfect creations, and Paul observed that we all
fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). However, as Christians
we are called to honor and respect everything God has created, and
that includes ourselves, warts and all.
I think we should love
our shameful attributes in a similar way as we are called to love our
neighbor. We might not feel affection for our neighbor – we might even
dislike our neighbor – but we should still love our neighbor because
our neighbor is a reflection of God, our neighbor’s creator.
Therefore, we should treat our neighbor with respect and, to the
degree that is safely possible, kindness. Similarly, even as we strive
to eradicate those attributes of which we are ashamed, we should look
respectfully and kindly upon them, acknowledging that they are
manifestations of our brokenness and opportunities for growth.
Next week, I will consider how we might accept what is despicable in
ourselves.
Stephen R. Kaufman, M.D.
