2. Activist Update
Lisa, who tabled at the Charlottesville Vegetarian Festival, writes:
My husband and I worked the table for the festival, which ran from
11-4. We were so glad it didn't rain! It's really interesting to compare
the difference in the attitudes and interests of people in different
cities, with this second tabling event. People in Charlottesville really
like bumper stickers, LOL! I don't have the exact numbers on what we
sold because I the material we had to put out was mostly the leftovers
from the last event, and I'm not sure what happened to my paper with
that info. We only sold one book, I know, which was interesting, seeing
as how we sold all of them in Asheville? But, we gave out more
literature, for sure. Lots of people thanked us for being there, and
many lingered and chatted a good while.
We appreciate you giving us a voice!

3. Reflection on the Lectionary
October 16, Matthew 22:15-22; What Belongs to God?
This passage includes Jesus saying, “Render therefore to Caesar the
things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” What
belongs to God?
Psalm 24:1 declares, “The earth is the Lord’s and the fulness
thereof, the world and those who dwell therein”. While everything might
belong to God as Creator, it does not appear that God routinely
intervenes when people behave as if the world belongs to them. Indeed,
in his book War Is a Force that Gives Us Meaning, Chris Hedges observes
that those responsible for crimes against humanity are rarely punished.
And we all know that those responsible for crimes against God’s
creatures are almost never held accountable.
As Christians we are called to be faithful, regardless of anticipated
consequences. Whether or not we expect rewards or punishments for our
actions, I think that living faithfully means focusing our efforts on
serving God. To do so, we must show respect for God’s earth, God’s
animals, and all of God’s Creation.
Next week I’ll reflect on whether we are justified by works, and the
following week I’ll reflect on whether we are justified by faith.
Stephen R. Kaufman, M.D.
4. This Week’s Sermon from Rev. Frank and Mary Hoffman
A Truly Strong Person is a Compassionate Person

5. Comment on Last Week’s Sermon (Why Are We Walking for Hunger?)
Frank Hoffman’s sermon was very good. One way that Christian
vegetarians can reach others I think is to invite friends and neighbours
to their homes for a time of prayer and bible study (there are many good
published studies to act as a framework ) and serve veggie refreshments.
Blessings, Louise.
6. This Month’s Issue of The Peaceable Table Is Online
Contents include:
- The Editor's Corner essay (formerly the Editorial), "I Am a True
Beast," deals with C. S. Lewis' novel “The Horse and His Boy" as an
example of the Myth of the Birth of the Hero. In particular, it reflects
on the meaning of the figure of the lion Aslan in the role of the
Extraordinary Animal, who not only helps the child-hero in his
adventures, but stands "in back of all the stories."
- The thoroughly mainline Scientific American has an editorial in its
current issue urging the banning of chimpanzee testing.
- Would you believe a sea lion embracing a penguin? Check out this
Glimpse of the Peaceable Kingdom.
- Hugh Dowding, WW II military hero who became a peer and a strong
voice for the animals in the British House of Lords, is the October
Pioneer.
