1. Our Ministry Needs Your Support
Many CVA members contribute their time, energy, and financial
resources to the CVA’s important ministry. Without this support, the CVA
would be unable to fill its mission to address crucial social,
environmental, and animal welfare concerns. In these uncertain economic
times, we know that many find that money is tight. Yet we need ongoing
to support to continue to distribute our booklets at Christian events
(about 150,000 booklets per year), to maintain an active web presence,
and to support our members in several ways.
To donate, go to the bottom of
www.christianveg.org/materialsh.htm . Those who choose a
Sustaining Membership receive the Take Heart! daily e-messages, which
include inspirational comments, biblical commentary, health tips, an
advice column, and recipes, and a one-year subscription to the excellent
VegNews magazine.
2. PETA Investigation Reveals Turkey Abuse
On the eve of Thanksgiving, a PETA undercover operation has, once
again, revealed outrageous abuse and cruelty on factory farms – this
time at a turkey-raising operation. Undercover video taken at the
Aviagen Turkeys plant in Lewisburg, West Virginia shows turkeys being
stomped to death and punched by workers. PETA is asking for prosecution
of Aviagen workers. On the tape, one worker describes losing his temper
at a tom who pecked him, marking its head with a pen so he could find it
again, fetching a broomstick, ramming it down the bird’s gullet and
holding it up in the air while shouting “Let this be a lesson to y’all”
at the rest of the flock. To read the full article please visit Group
documents cruelty to turkeys.
3. Activist Feedback
Gregory, tabling at the Veggie Cook-Off, writes: We had a marvelous
turnout at the veggie cook-off. We sold 3 books and 3 DVDs and gave away
a ton of free material. It was a pleasure to get to speak to people
about Christianity and vegetarianism.
4. Eating Mercifully (new DVD)
The Humane Society of the United States is offering its 26-minute
video Eating Mercifully for free at
http://allcreatures.hsus.org/resources/default.aspx . The
film features religious perspectives on our responsibilities to animals.
5. Veg. Recipes; Note about Last Week’s Recipe
Vegan Harvest Cornbread
2 cups white wheat flour, spelt flour, or whole wheat flour
2 cups whole grain cornmeal
2 1/4 Tb baking powder
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup + 3 Tb vegetable or safflower oil
1/4 cup agave nectar
1 3/4 - 2 cups milk alternative (such as soy, hemp, almond, oat milks)
fresh corn kernals from 1 stalk corn on the cob
1/3 cup + 1 Tb banana pepper, diced
1/3 cup + 1 Tb red onion, diced
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a medium bowl, mix all dry
ingredients. Make a well in the center of the bowl, and add agave and
oil. Then add milk, and combine liquid ingredients with the dry
ingredients until just blended with no flour clumps. Place in a medium
round pan coated with cooking spray. Bake in the oven for 40-45 minutes
until golden brown.
Please note: Last week’s recipe for Vegetarian Sloppy Joes
called for Worcestershire sauce. An astute reader noted that
Worcestershire sauce typically contains anchovies and therefore the
recipe is not vegetarian. Can anyone offer a good substitute?
