This sobering read
exposes the extremely irresponsible practice of overusing
antibiotics in animals raised for food. About 80% of all antibiotics
sold in the world are given to healthy food animals to help promote
growth and allow cheaper production methods, which in turn leads to
the development of antibiotic resistant superbugs. Public health
experts see signs that we are returning to a time when children died
of pneumonia and other illnesses since bacteria mutate faster than
we create new antibiotics.

Big Ag's big lie: factory farms, your health and the new politics of
antibiotics
As long as we all have cheap, factory-farmed meat, eggs and
dairy, big ag, pharmaceutical companies and the government don’t
seem to care about antibiotic resistant bugs, animal welfare, or
environmental devastation. This is why it’s so important that the
clear message comes from the consumer and a coalition of health,
animal and environment advocacy organizations because the change is
not coming from the top down.
