Evangelical Christian Lobbyist
Rev. Richard Cizik, an evangelical Christian lobbyist and vice
president for governmental affairs of the National Association of
Evangelicals, is an environmental activist. He admits that the
environment is a divine creation and must be protected by humans. Rev.
Cizik has experienced the reactions of the evangelical church in general
when issues like this are brought to light. "Simply for standing up and
saying, 'Climate change is real, the science is solid, we have to care
about this issue because of the impact on the poor' -- why would that be
controversial? Well, I'm sorry to say, it is controversial and there are
people who want to take my head off," stated Cizik. One of the crucial
points he emphasizes is that evangelical Christians can be a political
force that can make a difference by taking a stand and exercising our
privileges and responsibilities as stewards of God’s creation. He
reminds us that, “We're tenant-landlords and we will have to return it
at some point, at the end of time, to God who made it. And are we going
to return it in the condition it was made?"

While Rev. Cizik is right about the environment and our role in
protecting it, he fails to stress the fact that factory farming is
polluting the environment, contributing to global warming, to health
problems and to the suffering of billions of animals every day. A
plant-based diet helps protect the environment and the creatures that
live in it. Our hope is that religious leaders realize that there cannot
be peace and healing on Earth as long as animals are exploited and
tortured for profit and for their flesh.
