1. Diet Trumps Genetics

As it turns out, our genes don't dictate our destiny... at least not entirely, according to Jason Shon Bennett, an Auckand-based health researcher and author. His studies of centenarian cultures around the world where they eat predominately a plant-based diet led him to conclude that avoiding animal products and eating a plant-based diet with mostly unprocessed, whole foods can prevent and reverse most of the typical chronic diseases that are found in societies where animal products are abundant.

Please visit Disease prevention: Diet and lifestyle can trump genetics, says researcher.

It’s no surprise that eating foods that leave a small footprint on the planet and that don’t require the abusing and killing of God’s creatures are also very good for our health. Eating a plant-based diet is a good way to be good stewards of our bodies.

2. This Week’s Famous Quote

“The beef industry has contributed to more American deaths than all the wars of this century, all natural disasters, and all automobile accidents combined. If beef is your idea of “real food for real people,” you’d better live real close to a real good hospital.”

—Neal D. Barnard, MD, President, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine

3. Vegan Ultra-Marathoner Scott Jurek Breaks World Record

Vegan ultra-endurance runner Scott Jurek set a new world speed record by running the 2,200 miles on the Appalachian Trail (AT) in 46 days, 8 hours, and 7 minutes.

Kudos to this amazing and compassionate athlete who shows time after time that one does not need to eat animals to be in superb shape, or even to break a world record!

4. This Week’s Bible Verse
(RSV) 1 Samuel 16:7

But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the LORD sees not as man sees; man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart."

Our appearance and possessions say little about our beliefs. God is concerned about our actions that reflect what is in our heart. Let our actions and thoughts be compassionate and loving toward all Creation. After all, our attitude towards God’s creatures reflects the condition of our hearts in relationship to God.

5. Raising Plant-Based Kids

Doctor John McDougall, MD, who uses a low-fat, starch-based diet that results in dramatic health benefits for his patients and can reverse serious illness, such as heart disease, without drugs, sets the record straight about what is the best diet for children: a well-balanced plant-based one. He explains that all the nutrients required for a growing body are found naturally in plant-based foods, and that animal products --loaded with saturated fat, cholesterol and many other harmful substances-- should not be part of a human diet.
