1. Hell on Wheels

A new undercover investigation by Mercy for Animals Canada reveals atrocious cruelty to pigs being transported to slaughter. The following are some of the abuses pigs routinely suffer on their way to the slaughterhouse:

  • Pigs to sick or injured to even stand being painfully shocked with electric prods, kicked, beaten and violently rammed with heavy gates.
  • Workers using bolt cutters to cut through the sensitive tusks of male pugs without painkillers.
  • Frightened animals transported hundreds of kilometers in sweltering heat, suffering from heat stress and dehydration.
  • Sick and injured animals left to suffer without proper veterinary care in plain view of government inspectors.

The cruelty, fear, pain, terror and death are not going to end unless people stop supporting this industry. Our Christian core values: mercy, compassion, love and justice should motivate us to choose compassion by consuming plant-based foods.

2. Famous Quote

“We are a business, not a humane society, and our job is to sell merchandise at a profit, it’s no different from selling paper clips or refrigerators.”
~ Henry Pace, livestock auction yard owner

3. The Relentless Abuse to Pigs

This excerpt from Mother Jones contributing writer Ted Genoways' new book, The Chain: Farm, Factory, and the Fate of Our Food exposes the unimaginable cruelty that pigs undergo in factory farms and slaughterhouses throughout the U.S. Some of the cases are very disturbing and sadly too common.

“In one shot, a supervisor was shown beating a sow relentlessly on the back. In another, workers turned electric prods on a crippled sow and kicked pregnant sows repeatedly in the belly. A close-up showed a distressed sow knocked out, her face royal blue from the Prima Tech marking dye sprayed into her nostrils by a worker who said he was trying 'to get her high.' In one of the most disturbing sequences, a worker demonstrated the method for euthanizing underweight piglets: taking them by the hind legs and smashing their skulls against the concrete floor. Fellow workers whooped and laughed as he tossed the bloodied and twitching bodies into a giant bin.”

God’s farmed animals are exploited and killed relentlessly while most people choose to ignore it and continue to support this injustice with their animal-product laden meals. Animals do have a voice but people choose to be deaf to their screams. It’s imperative that everyone recognizes that abusing and killing God’s animals hurts humanity deeply. We become apathetic to the suffering of animals and humans as well.

4. Bible Verse
(RSV) Romans 12:2

Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Indeed, when our beliefs and actions are aligned, our choices tend to be more mindful and compassionate.

5. A Story of Compassion

This is the beautiful story of man, Declan Bowens, who as a young boy growing up in a farm chose to stop eating animals. He shares that he was able to make the connection between the feelings and suffering of the animals his family raised and the meals they shared. He rightly states, "Just because we can do it, doesn’t mean we should."

Once we make the connection between the suffering of God’s farmed animals and the meals they become, we feel compelled to alleviate their suffering and to try to live in harmony with them; therefore, we choose to eat plant-based foods.
