1. Do Animals Have Emotions?

Why is it that most people don’t think twice about acknowledging the emotions of animals such as dogs and cats but not those of the animals we eat? Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson, author of The Pig Who Sang to the Moon, says: "One of the things I took away from psychoanalysis is how much humans use denial to ward off stuff that we don't want to deal with," ... "And when people don't want to deal with what they're eating, they're in massive denial. ... My main concern is the deeper issue of how we fool ourselves into believing that animals want to die or want to be cooked or eaten. It's an old cliché of the mind that animals are happy to give their lives to us, that we've made a pact with domestic animals, that in exchange for giving them a good life and a quick death they will give themselves to us."

Denying the suffering of farmed animals is avoiding the responsibility we have as stewards of God's Creation because when we look at them as mere commodities we are able to rationalize the inherent cruelty of factory farming. When we open our minds and hearts to God's animals, we can see how they should also be recipients of our compassion and mercy.

2. Famous Quote

"Awareness is bad for the meat business. Conscience is bad for the meat business. Sensitivity to life is bad for the meat business. DENIAL, however, the meat business finds indispensable."

~John Robbins, Diet for a New America

3. Rejecting Violence Leads to Veganism

Professor Francione, Distinguished Professor of Law and Nicholas de B. Katzenbach Scholar of Law and Philosophy at Rutgers University, is often asked about what he thinks are the major arguments for going vegan. He believes that health and the environment are certainly very important issues but the ethical and moral concerns about rejecting violence are in his view the crucial ones.

The issue of rejecting violence is at the core of Christian teachings. Jesus exposed victimization and lived a life of non-violence to the point of sacrificing himself. By eating animals we are supporting the violence inflicted on God's farmed animals for profit and taste.

4. Bible Verse
(RSV) 1 John 4:19

We love, because he first loved us.

we are made in the image of God's love; therefore, we are called to reflect God's love onto all Creation!

5. New Ballot Initiative Launches in Ohio

Several animal advocacy groups have come together to gather signatures in the next months in order to bring a measure that will allow Ohio voters to provide guidance to the newly enacted Livestock Board and, in that way, set minimum humane standards in order to prevent cruel factory farming practices such as extreme confinement, rendering "downer cattle" for human consumption, and inhumane methods of euthanasia for sick and injured animals.

Let’s hope that people in Ohio decide to choose compassion and support these animal advocate groups so they can expose and minimize the victimization of God’s farmed animals.

6. Wal-Mart “Great Value: Eggs All Cage-Free

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. has confirmed that all of its private label "Great Value" eggs are cage-free. As a result, The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has decided to withdraw a shareholder resolution it submitted to Wal-Mart last year calling on the company to disclose its progress moving toward cage-free eggs. Although cage-free hens may not be able to go outside and may have parts of their beaks cut off, at least can walk, spread their wings, and lay their eggs in nests as opposed to battery-caged hens who can't even spread their wings and are denied of all natural instincts.

While there is no need for eggs in a healthy well-balanced diet, millions of people in the US still consume eggs. Egg-laying hens are probably the most abused animal by the factory farming industry and a very small step toward alleviating some of their suffering is the transition to cage-free eggs. Of course, our faith calls us to be compassionate and merciful toward all creatures and the best choice in this case would be to stop supporting the egg industry altogether.
