Welcome to the weekly CVA blog! In it you will find famous quotes, news and commentaries.

6. Slaughterplants Linked to Crime

1. Humane Slaughter? A recent report by the Animal Welfare Institute shows the US Department of Agriculture's (USDA) lack of priority in the enforcement of humane slaughter law. The unimaginable suffering and torture inflicted on farmed animals is evident in the more than 1,000 documents obtained from sources including 60 public records requests to federal and state agriculture departments from 2002 to 2007. Among many atrocities it describes obvious animal cruelty such as this case: "The hog was lying in the cradle and all four feet had been removed. The hog was observed to be kicking and shaking its head. It exhibited skin twitching and irregular but rhythmic breathing with deep abdominal and thoracic movement. It appeared to be gasping for breath."

What will it take for people to realize that animal welfare laws are rarely enforced and that their animal products-based diet is causing tremendous pain to God's animals? There's enough undeniable evidence that only an insensitive heart can turn away from the plight of farmed animals, which in turns mean disobedience to God in following Christ’s message of compassion, mercy and peace.

2. "We should be able to refuse to live if the price of living be the torture of sentient beings." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

3. COK Sues Poultry Producer: The animal advocacy group, Compassion Over Killing (COK) is suing the United Egg Producers trade group and ISE America, a company that operates a New Jersey egg farm, for the use of the words 'Animal Care Certified' in a logo on egg cartons, which misleads consumers about the cruel and abusive conditions that poultry suffer. United Egg Producers had agreed to replace it with the words 'United Egg Producers Certified' by April 2006, although the change has not happened yet. In their defense, ISE America Vice President Greg Clanton said they removed the "Animal Care Certified" logo from its cartons in early 2006 and that "It looks like perhaps an old original print may have been reproduced at some time and was not detected."

It's not unusual for the factory farming industry to mislead its costumers in order to hide the inherent cruelty of the business. That is why it is imperative that the truth behind industrial agriculture is revealed and that consumers do some research on their own in order not to fall pray of their tactics.

4. (RSV) Galatians 2:20

"I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."

When we show the fruits of the Spirit and live according to God's will, Christ is alive in us. Through Him we are able to show love, compassion and mercy to all Creation.

5. Bison Massacre: Last month, Yellowstone Park witnessed the slaughter of about 2,000 bison, either by hunters or transported to slaughterhouses. The reason for the culling is that these animals might carry and transmit brucellosis to cattle. Both, the public community and scientists were outraged at the slaughter. Scientists claim that Yellowstone’s bison are one of only two genetically pure herds owned by the federal government.

6. Slaughterplants Linked to Crime: Jennifer Dillard, at Georgetown Law, argues that prolonged work on a slaughterhouse exposes workers to the risk of psychological damage, including post-traumatic stress disorder. Also, Amy Fitzgerald, writing for the American Sociological Association, finds many ill-effects from the violent work of the slaughterhouse into the surrounding community, such us the higher rates of violent crime that U.S. counties that have slaughterhouses consistently have than demographically similar counties that don’t.
