1. World’s churches concerned about the
environment: Religions everywhere has something in
common: the belief that humanity is steward of God’s Creation, and
therefore we have a responsibility to take care of it. A top importance
issue is global warming and in the US already 85 Christian leaders have
kicked off this month a campaign to mobilize religious conservatives to
combat global warming.
The US is responsible for one quarter of the world's emissions of
carbon dioxide and uses one quarter of the world's crude oil. Martin
Robra, climate change spokesman for the World Council of Churches, said
the debate "must now shift from denial and delays to responsibility and
remedies well within humanity's grasp."

With factory farming responsible for about 17% of the global warming
gases emission, we would like to see church leaders advocating the
transition to a plant-based diet and its benefits for our health, the
environment and God’s animals.
2. “In order to
satisfy one human stomach, so many lives are taken away. We must promote
vegetarianism. It is extremely important.”
~ The XIV Dalai Lama of Tibet (1935 - present), quote from Live
in a Better Way, 2001.
3. Mexican dairy farming threatens Mexico's rare
desert oasis: Farmers are tapping underground water
supplies to grow green alfalfa leaves to feed dairy cows in Cuatro
Cienegas pools, which could dry the water within a decade. This area is
considered very valuable to NASA researchers because sicne the 170
cactus-ringed pools at Cuatro Cienegas contain fish, snails, turtles,
bacteria and unique living rock structures that offer a glimpse of the
life forms that flourished on earth 200 million years ago.

The negative effects of modern agriculture can be so detrimental that
they could wipe out from Earth invaluable flora and fauna. Humanity
usually doesn’t think that the damage is irreparable, but sometimes it
can be.
4. Matthew
22:37-39 “Love the Lord you God with all your heart
and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and
greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as
yourself.”
Loving God with all our heart, soul and mind is reflecting God’s love
for us onto all Creation. Our neighbors I believe are all creatures who
share the Earth with us.
5. Three species of shark endangered:
Scientists have added three species of deep sea sharks to the
endangered list of animals. Some sharks are caught for the high value of
their fins for human consumption or taken unintentionally in high seas
during swordfish and tuna fishing. Sarah Fowler of the World
Conservation Union's (IUCN) Shark Specialist Group said, "This week,
leading shark scientists from around the world highlighted the
vulnerability of these species to overfishing and concluded that several
species are now threatened with extinction on a global scale."
Although overfishing is one of the most destructive human activities,
it largely goes underestimated by most people. At the rate aquatic
animals are caught and killed for human consumption, many more of God’s
animals will forever disappear from rivers and oceans, while others will
continue to be pushed to the verge of extinction. How sad it is that we
are destroying God’s Creation!
6. Great Britain might consider food rationing:
The environment minister of Great Britain, Ben Bradshaw, has warned that
Britain may need to go back to Second World War-style rationing if
climate change runs out of control given that food production has done
as much damage as private transport and housing.
A new government website:
www.direct.gov.uk/greenerfood
states clearly that eating beef, lamb, chicken and dairy products
contributes to global warming because of the energy and land needed to
rear animals and also says that sheep and cows emit harmful methane gas.
